Our philosophy is simple – natural and as organic as possible from the vineyard to the bottle. We consider ourselves custodians of the Gibbston Back Road vineyard and believe in letting the vines do what they do best, with minimal intervention.
OUR HISTORY
Peter and Bridget Newbold purchased a scenic, peaceful acreage of 5ha on Gibbston Back Road in the Gibbston Valley, Central Otago in 1999, with the solo intention of building their dream home and realised the site was perfect for growing their favourite drop, pinot noir. After construction of their home was near completion, a vineyard was planted.
Until 2008, we sold all the grapes from our vineyard to well known Central Otago wine companies. That year, we decided to make a small batch of wine for our own use, choosing four rows of vines to harvest enough grapes to make one barrel of pinot noir. That wine was a revelation to us, a pure and distinctive reflection of our vineyard, and in 2010 we made our first wine for the commercial market. Gibbston Back Road Pinot Noir 2010 was launched in June 2011.
In June 2020, the ownership of this fine grape growing vineyard changed to Barry & Marie Patton where enthusiasm for their wine was taken from their travels through Malbec growing area in Mondoza, Argentina, to Saint Emilion in the wine-growing region of Bordeaux, and to the Valley of the Beautiful Women in Eger a city in Northern Hungary where there are almost two hundred cellars and will endeavour to continue producing gold medal award winning wine.
